May 20, 2014

According to global research company Millward Brown, Google has surpassed Apple and become the world’s most valuable brand in the 2014 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brand ranking with a worth of $159 billion.

Millward Brown’s May 20, 2014 press release notes that this value represents a 40 percent increase for Google for the year. According to the study, which was commissioned by the Store, WPP, and conducted by Millward Brown, Apple’s brand value slipped 20 percent to $148 billion while IBM held on to third position at $108 billion. Microsoft is fourth at $90 billion, McDonald’s is fifth at $85 billion, Coca-Cola is sixth at $80 billion, and Visa is seventh at $79 billion. Telecom’s AT&T is eighth at $77 billion, tobacco’s Marlboro stands at ninth at $67 billion, and retailer Amazon rounds out the top 10 at $64 billion.

“Google has been hugely innovative in the last year with Google Glass, investments in artificial intelligence and a multitude of partnerships that see its Android operating system becoming embedded in other goods such as cars. All of this activity sends a very strong signal to consumers about what Google is about and it has coincided with a slowdown at Apple,” said Nick Cooper, Managing Director at Millward Brown.
